Safety and danger do not exist as inherently separate entities – they are boundaries produced by institutions that generate a particular social order. That order is tacitly internalised within individuals and communities, leaving behind subtle traces and phenomena quietly embedded in everyday life. What We Hold proceeds from this recognition, working to bring those traces into visibility through gun culture and the materiality associated with it.
Across multiple segments, the project juxtaposes strictly controlled environments of regulated force against spaces presumed safe and freely accessible. It visually reconstructs historically tragic sites, relocates spent cartridges and ammunition into the studio to alter their cultural meaning, seals toy guns as markers of internalised violence, and reconstructs surveilled conditions through the scope of a rifle. This work attends not to the enforcement of those boundaries but to the ways they are absorbed into the fabric of ordinary life.
